Why does generation Z get fired faster ?
2 October 2024
A recent survey of almost 1,000 companies by Intelligent reveals that generation Z, or “zoomers”, are facing significant challenges in the world of work, particularly in terms of keeping their jobs. According to the survey, around three quarters of young graduates from this generation say they are dissatisfied with their jobs, and a significant number of them are made redundant shortly after entering the job market.
High expectations and a shock to professional reality
According to the study, only 25% of companies believe that young graduates successfully integrate into their teams. This lack of success is often due to a mismatch between the expectations of zoomers and professional realities. Having grown up in an environment where flexibility and ethics are paramount, Generation Z arrives on the job market with specific expectations in terms of corporate culture, sustainability, and the meaning given to their work.
Unlike previous generations, these young people are distinguished by their particular attention to ecological issues and responsible consumption. They are looking for companies that are aligned with their values, advocating sustainability and social responsibility. For some employers, this may seem restrictive or create a gap between the company's objectives and the expectations of young recruits. When there is a gap between these values and the corporate culture, this can lead to disengagement on the part of young employees, and even to early termination of the employment contract.
Lack of initiative and professionalism
The companies surveyed cite a number of reasons for dismissing young Generation Z employees. The main reasons include a lack of motivation and initiative, but also communication difficulties and a certain lack of professionalism. This lack of adaptability is often associated with a lack of ‘work culture’ and practical experience, as one professional development specialist explains. Indeed, for many young graduates, entering the job marketcomes as a real shock, in stark contrast to the academic environment in which they grew up.
The weight of stereotypes and the question of work ethic
At the same time, some employers are reluctant to take on young generation Z graduates because of the stereotypes associated with them. Many feel that these young people lack work ethic, a view shared by around half the companies surveyed. Frequent lateness, poor management of responsibilities, and a lack of professionalism in the way they present themselves or communicate are regularly mentioned. However, this generation is also prepared to question practices that they feel run counter to their values, particularly in terms of consumerism and ecology. This confrontation can sometimes be perceived as resistance to hierarchy, which contributes to their more rapid dismissal.
An opportunity for companies
Nevertheless, as the study points out, a list of favourable points is of course also drawn up. When companies invest in coaching and training these young talents, the results can be extremely positive. By working alongside more experienced colleagues, zoomers are able to acquire practical skills and integrate more easily into the corporate culture. This support is essential to foster their long-term success and capitalise on their potential.
How can we retain this generation Z ?
Generation Z is facing many challenges at work, but they are also paying greater attention to social and environmental issues. Companies that manage to understand and adapt to these new expectations can reap many benefits. To retain this young talent, it is crucial to offer working environments that reflect their values, while helping them to adapt to the realities of the professional world.
